In a small storage unit in the Gulfton Area of Houston, Freewheels Houston distributes freedom, complete with helmets.
Rows of bikes, generously donated by Houstonians from across the city, are packed in to the warehouse/repair shop/show room. In the vastly sprawling Houston metropolis, newly settled refugees must find their way to job interviews, work, school, and shops. With few transportation options, a bike offers something that we all deserve: Freedom.
Since their 2015 launch Freewheels has distributed approximately 300 bicycles to men, women, and children seeking refuge in Houston.
Our goal is to enable people to overcome the challenges of navigating a new, sprawling city. Bikes permit refugees to achieve freedom of movement, encourage their self-sufficiency, live a healthier life and thrive. ~Freewheels
This June, Freewheels is partnering with PAIR Houston, BikeHouston, and Lutherhill Ministries to host a bike day camp for 50 middle school students in Gulfton. Campers will learn about bike handling, maintenance and safety; enjoy the outdoors; build community and most of all, HAVE FUN. Each camper will receive a bike, helmet and safety equipment.
Americans United in Action believes that every Houstonian deserves the freedom of self-sufficiency and independence. We are thrilled to support Freewheels Houston in their goal of “freedom for refugees to pursue a new life in Houston by enhancing their mobility,” by providing volunteer support for June’s Bike Day Camp. NO BIKE KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED to participate! Ages 16+ welcome.
